Summer jobs

Given the current economic climate, one would predict that the numbers of summer jobs is far less than last year. However, AGR Summer Review does not predict any heavy reduction in graduate recruitment in 2009 with only 13.6% of the survey respondents’ predicting either slightly fewer, far fewer or no new graduates will be recruited in 2009. HECSU reports that the largest group of respondents, 51.5% of the total, expect there to be similar numbers of graduate recruitment in 2009 as there was in 2008, however a substantial number of the respondents, 32.1% in total, are expecting increases in graduate recruitment during 2009.Based on HECSU report, the chance of getting a good summer job 2009 looks bright. There seem to be a wide range of employment opportunities. The big question at this point seems to be; Who is going to take them?
There is more than one way to look for jobs. The most effective way is a combination of different methods working together. Try to attack on several fronts at the same time, and you will increase your chances for summer job success.Be proactive – It’s not enough to put your resume on different websites and just sit back and wait for the phone calls to come in. Finding a job should be considered a job in itself, and time should be set aside accordingly.Check job listings and contact employers directly. Tell everyone - family, friends, neighbors, schoolmates, and chat buddies - that you are looking for summer jobs. What work you can take depends on what you can do and how old you are
Do your research before walking into an interview – During an interview with most companies, expect to be asked whether you have any questions about the company, make sure you’ve done your homework and learned what the company’s all about before interviewing with them.
Having a summer job contains both rights and obligations. Your employer expects, for example, that you should come on time and perform your tasks. Do not be afraid to ask for help and ask questions. Everyone knows that you are new, and at some point everyone has been where you are today...

Modern Apprenticeship: Opening New Horizons for a Better Life

Modern Apprenticeships are programs of learning which geared towards obtaining the necessary skills and knowledge required by employers. They provide people 16 years and above the chance to earn while training and gaining qualifications and skills prerequisite in starting a career sans full time study.
Modern Apprenticeship frameworks are designed to suit the needs of the industry or sectors wherein they will be utilized and include all the necessary skills to produce a better craftsman, a technician or even a manager in the area. It may also be used as training tools for employees who have been working for years and wanted an improved career.
Modern Apprenticeship concept is backed up by the Government, the Trade Union Congress and the Confederation of Business and Industry as well as the different industry employers.
Early Beginnings
Apprenticeships already existed in the United Kingdom as early as the 12th century. Parents or guardian would send their minor children for apprenticeship for five to nine years, honing a trade or craft. In return, they will pay a premium to the craftsman.
Apprenticeship became obsolete in modern times, when employment in heavy industries and other trade declined. The lowest level of apprenticeship was recorded in the 1970s.
In an attempt to revitalize vocational training, the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) were introduced in 1986 and in 1994, Modern Apprenticeship, based on the frameworks devised by the Sector Skills Council came into life. The frameworks include a number of certified components such as (a) knowledge-based or “Technical Certificate” and (b) competence-based usually through an NVQ certification.
The number of apprenticeship framework reached 160 by the year 2005 and the coverage expanded further to include the service sector. Today, there are about 180 apprenticeship frameworks in more than 80 industry sectors.
Requirements Choosing the appropriate apprenticeship depends on apprentices’ interest, experience, and present opportunities. Though Modern Apprenticeship frameworks may be specific for a particular industry, there are common elements such as:
• An appropriate work-based qualification such as a National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) to determine the apprentice’s job competence
• Basic skills which include communication, teamwork, problem solving and using new technology. These skills help employees become more flexible and adaptable to changing work environment
• Other qualifications required by the particular industry like additional units from other SVQs or academic qualifications such as Higher National Certificated and Diplomas Benefits of Apprenticeship
Apprenticeship is beneficial to both the trainees/employees and the employers. On the part of the employers, apprenticeship ensures that the workforce is equipped with practical skills and qualifications relevant not only to the organization but to the industry as well. Likewise, it promotes:
1. enhanced productivity2. invigorated employees3. well-trained and up to date workforce4. prevents shortage of skills.
On the trainees/employees side, apprenticeship is a rewarding endeavour that enables them to:
1. earn while gaining qualifications/experience suited to their needs
2. be guided by a mentor to ensure that the training fits the apprentice’s personal requirements, offers the needed skills for the job and satisfies the NVQ, which the employers gave high valued and recognition
3. assimilate key skills useful in the job market
4. have brighter prospects. Completion of apprenticeship is a path either to continuously work with the organization or as stepping stone to college and university
The Apprenticeship is getting wide acceptance. In England alone, there are about 250,000 apprentices in various types of apprenticeship which include construction, financial services, agriculture, animal care and others....

The psychopath’s guide to good management

Right now you’re about to excavate the knowledge out of an inexhaustible goldmine of tips and advice on the best way to manage being a manager. It doesn’t matter what branch you’re in or what size your company is.The only thing you need to remember is: It all boils down to attitude. And between you and me, if you can’t manage to learn that then you’re really thick.
So, who am I?I’m a bit of a God when it comes to management. I’m extremely qualified as I have several companies. Loads, in fact. Probably more than you could ever imagine having, even in your wettest dreams. And I run them all.At this point I’d like to take the opportunity to stress that it’s not that easy to be like me. I was born with my ability and I really would hate you to be jealous or desperate about all my success. Instead, take advantage of my well thought out tips and advice in the following lines and feel yourself grow as a leader and a manager.
Employee groups.A large part of the job as manager involves putting up with a bunch of idiots. It’s mostly a matter of moaning, incompetent staff that need everything doing for them. The easiest way of dealing with people like that is quite simply to divide them into groups and then sort them out.
TechniciansA pitiful but necessary group.Characteristically the sort that shuffle around the office in fancy pants and pullovers, they can also drink coffee with too much sugar in.It’s important to remember one thing; this group has no life, no meaningful existence. That’s why it’s your job to fill their world with a grain of hope. The easiest way to do this is make sure they have as much to do as is humanly possible. This way they are spared from sitting at home suffering and at the same time have something sensible to do. If you can, introduce shifts and make sure that the technicians work the evenings, nights and weekends.Forward all the customer calls to this group, especially the unpleasant ones. As the boss, you shouldn’t have to be involved in those. The technicians’ foremost task, therefore, is to save your skin. These are, in other words, the people you turn to when you’ve promised a new customer something impossible.
SalesrepsThis is the worst group. Often seen striding around the corridors in jeans and billowy hairstyles, smoking king size cigarettes. The thing they have most difficulty accepting is that you are the best salesperson. The only thing you need to remember about this group is that you pay their wages and they should do as you say. Before you say it.These are the ones you pay to be able to snap at when a sale goes wrong. Even if it happens to be you that had sole contact with the customer.
The finance departmentMore dregs.Often wear badly fitting shirts and have a poor understanding of how to behave around people. This can sometimes be a very beneficial group, especially when they come up with something that results in more money in your bank account. This is such a rare phenomenon, however, as to be barely worth mentioning. It is in any event important to keep on the right side of these colleagues. They are after all the ones you turn to when you need to conjure up a couple of thousand towards the family holiday.
Worthwhile co-workersRelatives or people you owe fall into this category. Quite simply it’s a matter of the types of individuals you can’t rid yourself of. Whether they are competent or not is irrelevant. The most important thing is that you let them believe they are. Not doing so could be expensive.
Dealing with personnel. How you deal with your staff depends partly on what group they belong to. At the same time there are unwritten rules you should apply to them all.• If there’s something you want, don’t get it yourself. Whether it’s a stapler, a cup of coffee or a waste paper bin within reach, do not under any circumstances fetch it yourself. Learn these three sacred words: USE THE TELEPHONE.Ring someone in the office and ask them to get what you need at that moment. You are the boss and this procedure will ensure that your staff never forget that. If you want to ask for something, never go the person involved: Use the telephone. Quite simply you let people come to you. It’s vitally important that you establish these boundaries so that it’s quite clear to everybody where your respective places in the hierarchy are.
• Be interested in your colleagues. This creates a good atmosphere around the office and makes you out to be a warm and considerate boss. An example of how to follow this rule could be to use the following statements:“Have you stopped training?”“You’re starting to look a little tubby.”“Funny, you’re smarter than I thought.”With a few well chosen comments you can show your staff that you really care.
• Don’t let reservations get in the way. It’s a question of trusting your instincts. If there’s something you need doing (that realistically will take three days to do), say you want it done in three quarters of an hour. If you think that’s possible, then it is, that’s all there is to it. Remember, you’re the leader. The alpha leader always demands the impossible. If your staff don’t come up with the goods in the amount of time you’ve decided should do, then it’s important to show them how disappointed you are. Inefficiency should never be encouraged.
Invoicing and related questionsIt is well known that there are two sides to this coin.
Getting payments from customers. This is the fun part. Ensure your invoicing is aggressive. This means sending out invoices left right and centre and making sure they get paid. Round up to whole numbers and don’t take any nonsense from anyone who raises any objections. You run your company far better than the guy sitting at the other end of the telephone runs his.During discussions about invoicing matters it’s important to begin with the right tone of voice so that you make clear who’s in charge from the start.Grit your teeth and lower your voice to a level where you sound calm, collected and completely psychotic. Sigh. Pause for effect at significant moments. Ask trenchant questions, such as: “What do you mean, not pay?” and use subtle threats with impunity. You could even try bumping up invoices now and again. If it works, it works. If not use your “Oh, me who is so nice and reliable and so sorry” voice and then carry on as normal.
Paying bills yourself.Don’t bother.
How to create a mental blacklist and why.The mental blacklist is a really useful tool and is something every executive should have.A mental blacklist is one you keep in your head. This is a list your employees should try not to be on. Basically, anybody you don’t like at the time lands in this pile. Any employee who ends up on this list is in a precarious position to say the least. This is where staff risk being sacked quicker than they can say union representative.
Let’s say someone in the workforce does something you don’t like. With a few seconds deliberation you put that person on your list. You should let the person concerned know they are on the list and the easiest way to do it is to glare at the guilty party, nodding meaningfully while you tap yourself distractedly on the forehead. This signals to the person in question that “You’re on my list now and from now on there’s a bounty on your sad backside” as well as that he or she ought to correct their mistake right away.
Note that a person can be crossed off the list as quickly as they arrived there. Don’t under any circumstances tell anyone whether they are still on the list or not. Let your staff keep wondering. This keeps personnel on tenterhooks as they never know if they are on the list or have been temporarily reprieved.A small but simple trick to keep up attentiveness and efficiency around the office!
The successful staff meeting.
The aim of a successful staff meeting is to inspire people with enthusiasm and make them work harder for the good of the company. By all means start the meeting by looking gloomily at your staff with a furrowed brow. Look at your notebook. Sigh. Look up again at your workforce and shake your head sadly. This sets the tone for the whole meeting and you can begin to talk straightaway. The key thing here is to speak with an exhausted voice. You want to sound overcome and melancholy, underlaid with a miniscule amount of rage.Tell the gathering that someone is going to be sacked in the near future, in any event as long as they continue to perform so badly. Refer frequently to the possibility of staff redundancies. In order to convey the seriousness of the situation take the opportunity to let your gaze rest upon those who happen to be on your blacklist at the time.Of course, they could have achieved the budget you set at last year’s staff meeting but you should preferably choose not to mention that at all. It’s important to keep them on their toes.Ideally, hold staff meetings just before major holidays. This results in staff keeping themselves alert and productive during their time off.
Finally: Don’t forget the only thing a good manager needs to know.It all boils down to attitude!

Flexible Work: Promote Balanced Work Effectiveness and Personal Life

Flexible work is a working pattern adapted to balance work effectiveness and personal life. Unlike the conventional work requiring 9:00 to 5:00 full time job, flexible work is tailored fit for employees who:
1. work and study at the same time2. have other responsibilities aside from work3. have responsibilities with their church, and4. have retired from working full time but can do part-time job.
Types of Flexible Work
People are familiar with part-time or shifting work patterns. However, the following types of flexible working may also be considered:
• Part-time working usually entails lesser working hours compared with full time workers and part-time workers enjoy the same benefits on pro rata basis. • Flexi-time is working scheme wherein an employee have the choice, within the set limits, when to start and stop work. An employee can work for a shorter or longer period on a particular day provided the total number of hours required for the accounting cycle is satisfied.
• Shift-work is a pattern in industries normally on 24-hours operations, wherein employees worked on rotation or shift. Shifting can be arranged among themselves and all necessary shift must be covered
• Annualized hours is a scheme wherein working time are computed on annual basis. Most of the contracted hours are set shift or apportioned and the rest are unallocated/reserved and employees can be called upon on short notice. • Compressed Hour is a scheme wherein individuals worked on the agreed number of hours on a shorter period, by starting early and/or finishing late. An employee, instead of working 9:00 to 5:00 Mondays thru Fridays, may opt to work 8:00 to 6:00 Mondays thru Thursdays.
• Staggered Hours allowed employees to start and finish a day’s work at varying times. This scheme is applicable in the retail sector wherein business is more heavy during the lunch time and more staff are needed but lighter at the beginning and end of each day.
• Job Sharing is a system wherein two workers shoulder the accountability for a full time job. Job sharers may either work alternate weeks or work split days/split weeks and can ease heavy workload by being present during peak periods.
• Home Working is job done from home, either on temporary or permanent working setup. This arrangement is based on trust and working away from business is made possible by advances in technology, that is, utilization of telephone, mobile phones and computers.
Benefits of Flexible Work
Flexible work is beneficial to both the employees and the employers. From the point of view of employees, flexible work gives them more freedom to balance their work with other aspects of their lives. They develop greater sense of responsibility, loyalty and commitment.
On the other hand, employers who implement flexible working provide equal opportunities to staff not capable of completing the standard working hours and organize labor resources to match the customers’ needs.
Likewise, flexible working enables the organization to cope with the pressure of producing goods and services of the right quality, competitive price and timely delivery. The scheme can help in addressing the pressure by maximum utilization of available labor, improvement in customer service and at the same time enhancing productivity and the reduction of absenteeism....

Flexible working can be of great real help in easing the impact economic crunch. It is an opportunity which enhances workplace effectiveness and promotion of an equitable and sustainable way of combined work and personal life.
The Right to Request for Flexible Working
The Right to Request for Flexible Working is embodied in Employment Right Act 2002 introduced in April 2003, entitling employees/parents of young and disabled children the right to request to work flexibly.
In April 2007, the coverage was expanded to include carers for adults. Carer, as defined, is an employee who is or expects to be looking after an adult whom:
1. The employee is married to, or is the partner of2. The employee is related to, and3. Falls into neither category but lives with the employee. Eligibility
To qualify for the Right to Request Flexible Working, the applicant must be an employee with a contract of employment. The employee must:
• have a child below six years or an incapacitated child under 18• be an adult carer • be employed continuously for 26 weeks at the date of filing• not have prior request for flexible working during the past 12 months• be looking after a relative (parents, parents-in-law, adult child, adopted adult child, siblings, uncles, aunt, grandparents or step-relatives)
In applying for flexible working rights, the employee must comply with the following requirements:
• submission of a dated written application stating that the request is done under the statutory right to apply for flexible working• the employee’s relationship to the child or adult must be substantiated • the application must outline the employee’s proposal as well as the consequence the change will have on the employer’s business and how to deal with this consequence • the starting date of the proposed change must be specified to give the employer an ample time to consider and implement the proposal. This usually takes 12 to 14 weeks. • the requisition must declare whether a prior request was made and the date when it was made In case of approved application, the employees must be aware that the alteration in terms of contract is permanent and cannot be changed automatically to its original pattern, unless the alteration is for specific period only. In this case, a trial period may be agreed.
The employer, on the other hand, must abide with the following procedural requirements:
• Meet with the employee, with the presence of a colleague, within 28 days of receipt of the application to discuss the matter. If the employer is agreeable to the terms of the application, the meeting is inapplicable but just the same, inform the employee within 28 days. • Give the employee a notice of their decision within 14 days of the meeting, whether the request was approved, rejected or will be subjected to compromise agreement. In cases of rejection, an explanation why the request was turned down is a must.
What transpired during the meeting must be properly documented and the employee must be furnished with a copy of the record. The Positive Impact
Flexible working practices are beneficial for business especially during turbulent times. The organization wanted their employees to perceive their work better than “just a job” and expect the loyalty and dedication of satisfied employees.
Flexible working boosted employees’ motivation, commitment and performance. Likewise, it show a positive connection with lower stress and better health and well being as well as achieving a positive effect of work enjoyment and productivity....

Jobs Scenario in London

The job market like the economy is in sorry state. The continuous deterioration of the economy pushed unemployment at its highest level since 1997. Employment in the financial as well as the housing sectors exhibited the sharpest decline as a result of the retrenchment in the financial sector services and the slack in housing building One good news, though, is the upsurge in demand for manpower in sectors such as tourism and catering, nursing/medical and healthcare providers as well as the agriculture.Reduction in Migrant WorkersTo give local workers greater employment opportunities, the government reduced the number of job available for migrant workers. Issuance of working visa was cut by 200,000, from one million to 800,000.To trim down further the influx of migrant workers, the shortage occupation list in lieu of the work permit system will be implemented and a new points-based migration system similar to the Australian style point-based system will be adopted. The implementation of the new system will take effect in late November. For employers seeking to engage to services of foreign skilled workers in positions outside the shortage list, it must prove that local workers are not qualified by having the Resident Labor market test. Recruitment TrendsAlthough there is a slowdown in hiring of personnel, it is suggested that employers continue to engage the services of recruitment agencies. Recruitment agencies will help in the formulation of cohesive strategies that will help in sourcing candidates, assist people in gaining their employment back as well as helping the employers in filling their vacancies with the right staff....
